FSX+Acceleration+Install
I found that the best way to load acceleration is:
Uninstall FSX.
Defrag.
Install FSX.
Defrag.
Install SP1.
Defrag.
Install Acceleration+SP2.
Defrag.
Defrag before and after every step and do not launch the sim at anytime until you are finished.
There may be an alteration made to the FSX cfg that will damage the full installation.
I have some screenshots of the P-51 if you care to see in the FSX Military Screenshot forum...be kind with your comments.

So Installation of FSX and SP2 will take more than 3hours...Or we have to install FSF to a 20GB HD and keep our add-ons to the basement _________________

I'd be more happy about installing Acceleration if I didn't think I'd be in a coffin by the end of it _________________ a

I will get to the bottom of this in a few days. Despite earlier misgivings, I have it on order from TigerDirect. It was unavailable at my local Best Buy and Circuit City stores and was out of stock at amazon.com. I guess they all sold their initial 6 copies.
My idea, make sure I have a good restore point and then install. Anything that requires all that uninstalling isn't worth it. Besides, I haven't had anything nasty to say about MS in over a week. _________________ CrashGordon

Yet again, Crash proves to be a convert to the evil empire!
And X-pack contains SP1 and would install that onto a system, if not already present. Sooooo, if anybody has a RTM install of FSX and wanted X-pack, it would handle things smoothly. Except for Crash... |

Nothing goes smoothly here. Everything is paid for in blood. However, everyone was complaining about all sorts of things with SP1 and that was quite uneventful here. _________________ CrashGordon

I just installed it, restarted and defraged it and it is fine. Those steps are not necessary. _________________

I too just installed Acceleration and other than an incompatible version of an add-on, it was fine. I think you may have an unhealthy attachment to the defrag process there my friend.
Seriously, it is needed, but I don't think you need to go through the pain in between each step. |

I agree. I also think the culture of uninstall-reinstall, which is unique to Windows users, is utter nonsense. Uninstall-reinstall is ploy used by tech support personnel when they are clueless as to what the problem is. The reason that approach is flawed is that most programs do not fully remove all traces of themselves when uninstalled. Apparently most software devlopers take the approach, "if you don't like our wonderful program and want to remove it, to hell with you". _________________ CrashGordon

Unfortunately loading SP1 on a established add-on scenery laden install of FSX will prove to be less than spectacular.
When you do uninstall and run defrag you'll see by the graphic how bad your disk is.
Each time you do it you'll see this.
Unless you have a machine that had a CPU that has been in the house for 12 years or has 200gigs worth of programs, videos and MP3's the defrag goes quite quickly.
Do I enjoy sitting and waiting for the next step...no, but I did get a pristine setup when finished and If I'm careful with what I add to it it'll stay running perfect.
What I posted above is a short tutorial on the best way to do it not the only way to do it.
I did it that way and the results to me have been much more than satisfactory.

My FSX folder is currently at 75.2 GB. I use a defrag program that automatically defrags in the background, so I don't have to worry about it.
But with as many addons as I have, uninstall-reinstall is not an option. _________________ CrashGordon

True and not true.
They have sand looking textures (quite plain, brown and ugly). True high desert like at Edwards-Mojave is grey, small rocks and loaded with short scrub. It would look much better than the plain brown at KLAX.

I don't discourage defraging at all. However doing it in between each step is a little like cooking dinner, but running each individual dish through the dishwasher as you go. I tend to prefer saving the dishes for the end when they can all go into the washer at the same time. |
