I've simplified using the FMC as much as possible, let me know if this helps at all. Bear in mind that it was constructed using the Level D 767 so will vary from FMC to FMC. Please let me know if there is anything vastly different to any other FMC so I can include it or simply any bits that are unclear. Any suggestion welcome. Hope it helps a bit.

The red parts are direct instructions, the orange parts are direct instructions for SIDs and STARs, the blue parts are the phases of flight you'll need to do the subsequent actions and anything else is just further information.

For the guide to be of use, you need to have done the following:

- Started a flight in FS9 or FSX at the gate
- Sorted fuel quantities and payload
- Have the engines started and stabilised
- A route (flight plan) set out with nav aids as waypoints.

At the gate...
1) - Open the FMC. You'll be faced with "Menu" and a list of items on the left, one of which will be "FMC".

2) - Click the line button next to the word "FMC". You'll see a "Ident" page with information such as Nav Data, engines and model. This is largely irrelevant.

3) - Click the "Pos Init" button at the bottom right hand corner.. You'll be on the "Pos Init" page including coordinates of the last known position (through the IRS), the Ref airport, GMT (time) and the option to set the IRS position.

4) - Set the departure airport as your Ref airport. This will update the position on the FMC. If you click "Next Page" you can cycle through pertaining information to the Inertial Reference Systems (systems that track your movement through coordinates).

5) - Click "Route" at the bottom right hand corner. You'll have a page of origin, destination, flight number and co route.

6) - Enter the ICAO code for your departure and arrival airports in the appropriate boxes. Go ahead and enter a flight number if you wish, this is optional.

***Here you need to find out the departure runway. You can either tune to ATIS or speak to ground control to get a taxi clearance***

7) - Enter the departure runway below the departure airport. If you don’t do this, the V speeds will not work!

8) - Click the "Next Page" button. You'll see the RTE1 page (Route 1) with a "Via" and "To" column. The name of the nav aids (i.e. the identification codes for VORs and intersections) goes on the right hand column and any airways you want to use go on the left hand side. If you just wish to enter the name of the nav aid (mandatory) but not the airway (optional) it'll create "Direct" on the left hand side.

9) - Enter the navigational aid identifiers into the "To" column. Do this for every nav aid until you get to the last nav aid for your journey.

10) - Click "Activate" in the bottom right hand corner. This will illuminate the “EXEC” (execute) button.

11) - Click the “EXEC” button. This will save your route and the route will go pink (to tell you it's confirmed) on the navigational display. The "Perf Init" button will now become visible on the bottom right hand corner.

12) -Click "Perf Init". You'll see the "Perf Init" page with a mixture of aircraft information to include gross weight, fuel, zero fuel weight, reserves, cruise altitude, cost index and step size.

13) -Enter the gross weight of the aircraft. This can be found if you go to "Aircraft" and "Fuel and Payload" in the toolbar at the top. Write down the Gross Weight and enter the first three digits into the GR WT boxes. The ZFW (zero fuel weight) will automatically fill in.

14) -Enter "5" as the reserves for your flight, enter your desired cruise altitude and enter 100 as the "Cost Index". The reserve is the amount of fuel you want to put aside in case you need to divert or hold. Cost index is a complex phenomenon of fuel consumption vs financial savings. It need not be explored further. The takeoff button will now become visible.

15) -Click the "Takeoff" button. You'll see some information pertaining to the takeoff. The only thing you need enter on the left is "flaps".

16) -Enter the flap setting to be used in degrees, i.e. 5, 10 or 15 The V speeds should automatically be created.

It’ll now say “PRE-FLT Complete” – your pre-flight programming is now done.

****Setting up Standard Instrument Departures (SID) and Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STAR)...****

Note that these are not essential. If you don’t want to use a SID or STAR, you don’t need to. However, you will need to select your arrival runway in DEP/ARR and click “EXEC”. If you don’t want to use a SID or STAR, skip to point number 21.

If you do want to use SIDs and STARs, read points 17 onwards.

17) - Go to the “DEP/ARR” page.. This will bring up a page of all possible runways and departure patterns.

18) - Click on the runway you have been assigned and select the departure pattern you want to use. It’s sensible to see if there is an instrument departure procedure for the first waypoint in your route. If so, choose this option. You can also choose a transition for this SID if you wish.

19) - Click “EXEC”. The SID will now appear on your navigational display.

20) - Click “Index"...to go back to the main page of DEP/ARR. If you know the arrival runway and want to choose your STAR and arrival runway, do so now. You can do this later on into your journey, though.

21) – Taxi to the assigned runway, adding the necessary flaps, setting autobrakes to RTO, and setting up the autopilot should want to use it, and commence takeoff. You’ll hear 80kts, V1, VR and positive rate of climb, gear up callouts. Assume the necessary actions at these points.

22) – Engage autopilot, LNAV and VNAV, arm the autothrottle and engage the flight director. Make sure you have your cruise altitude assigned in the window. The autopilot will now control your vertical and lateral movements.

En Route (before top of descent)...
23 – Go to the LEGS page and check you have no discontinuities or holds. If you do, click on the waypoint beneath the discontinuity and place it into the blank box above. Keep doing this until you have rid of all discontinuities, making sure you click “EXEC” when it lights.

24 – When approaching the top of descent, change the altitude window to ILS interception altitude. The top of descent is marked on the navigational display by a green “T/D”. The aircraft will simply not descend if you don’t change this in the MCP. If you go to LEGS you can see at what altitude you will capture the localiser.

25 – Choose the arrival runway and appropriate STAR (if you wish). Without the arrival runway, there will be no top of descent and you’ll keep cruising over your arrival airport.

En Route (whilst descending)...
26 – Go to Init Ref and select the mixture of flap and approach speed you want to use, and enter it into the blank space below.. You’ll now have an approach speed: Vref.

What a pain Confused ...Jon how you erase and reset everything in case of a possible mistake?

I know that I can res-start the flight but there must be the real way to do it Idea

There is no need to reset it, you can just write over the part you made a mistake. What problem do you have?

Think of it as a word document that you've written...if there is a mistake in it, you don't delete it all and start again, just correct the wrong part.

Whatever you type in (or key in) will go to the bottom left and corner, you then click the line button to the left / right of the field you want to enter it in. So you'd click the line next to "Dest" and the four blank boxes. Same goes for any entering in the FMC.

Sorry, I didn't make that bit clear

To me it's complex because I've never tried it but yes, alone and when I have the time and patience.
